Plate & Tempered Glass

Plate Glass

Plate glass, also known as annealed glass, is the standard glass used in many residential and commercial applications. It offers excellent clarity and is easy to cut, shape, drill, and polish, making it a versatile and economical choice for a wide range of projects.

We stock several standard thicknesses of clear plate glass, including 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm, with additional thicknesses available by special order. The appropriate thickness depends on the size of the glass and its intended use.

Common applications for plate glass include picture frames, cabinet doors, display cases, shelving, storm windows, and replacement window panes where tempered glass is not required. Plate glass can be cut to custom sizes to suit your project.

Unlike tempered glass, plate glass can be cut and fabricated in our shop, allowing for faster turnaround on most custom orders. If your project requires safety glass or must meet building code requirements, we can help determine whether tempered glass is the better choice.

Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is significantly stronger than standard plate glass. Through a specialized heat-treating process, the glass is heated to over 600°C and then rapidly cooled with high-pressure air. This process increases its strength and changes the way it breaks. If damaged, tempered glass shatters into small, rounded pieces rather than large, sharp shards, helping reduce the risk of injury.

Because of its strength and safety features, tempered glass is commonly used in shower doors, glass railings, patio doors, storefronts, table tops, shelves, cabinet doors, and other applications where safety glass is required by building codes.

Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or altered after it has been tempered, so all sizing, edgework, and holes must be completed beforehand. For this reason, all tempered glass is processed in a specialized tempering furnace at an off-site facility.

We are happy to measure, quote, and order tempered glass to your exact specifications. Since each piece is custom manufactured, lead times vary depending on the size, complexity, and processing requirements of your order. Contact us for a quote and estimated turnaround time.

Fireplace Glass

Fireplace glass is a specialized ceramic glass designed to withstand the extreme temperatures produced by wood stoves, fireplace inserts, and some high-efficiency wood-burning appliances. Unlike standard plate or tempered glass, ceramic fireplace glass is engineered to resist thermal shock and can safely handle continuous exposure to high heat while providing a clear view of the fire.

Because fireplace glass is made for specific high-temperature applications, it is important to replace it with the correct type of glass. Standard plate or tempered glass should never be used in a wood stove or high-temperature fireplace, as it can fail when exposed to excessive heat.

We supply custom replacement fireplace glass cut to fit your appliance. Simply provide your existing glass or accurate measurements, and we’ll help determine the correct replacement. All fireplace glass is special ordered from our supplier, so lead times will vary depending on the size, shape, and availability. Contact us for pricing and an estimated delivery time.
